Preparing for Blizzards

It is important to be prepared during severe winter weather.

  • Stay off the roads whenever possible.
  • Make sure if you do drive, you have a full tank of gas and emergency supplies packed.
  • Refill medications and other critical supplies before the weather gets too bad.
  • Remove vehicles from the street, especially if they are parked on an Emergency Response Route.
  • Clear snow and ice from walkways around your house.
  • Clear snow from around fire hydrants near your property.
  • Remove holiday decorations that could be airborne in high winds.
  • Only call 911 in a true emergency.
  • Be prepared for power outages.
  • Create an emergency supply kit in your home:
    • One gallon of bottled water per person, per day (for at least 3 days)
    • A three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person and your pets
    • At least a three-day supply of any prescription medications
    • Battery powered radio
    • Flashlights and extra batteries
    • First aid kit
    • Baby wipes
    • Plastic trash bags and ties
    • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
    • Cell phone with portable charger
    • Extra fuel for power generators.
